I decided to find out what this variety of people enjoy playing the most on the Nintendo Wii, and to find out the mixture of personal reviews on Nintendo's motion-controlled console.
I got a large response, with comments on our blog, opinions posted on my own deviantART page, as well as a large collection of comments on the poll over at NintyFans. Below is just a small sample of the responses collected.
What is your favourite game on the Wii?
Judging from the responses, it appears that a significant amount of people agree that Nintendo's two biggest franchises, the Super Mario and Legend of Zelda series agree that their games have generated the most enjoyment
The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess and Super Smash Bros. Brawl were definitely the top contenders for "best Wii game" for these NintyFans members.
Kim-San says that Super Smash Bros. Brawl has "great multi player, variety, good music, great game play and fantastic graphics!"
Jopeja agrees with arguably Nintendo's greatest fighting game, Super Smash Bros. Brawl, but also adds "or Mario Kart Wii. Any time my family had company, and there some younger people who needed to be entertained, we'd throw out those games and everyone would love 'em."
Nintendo fans swamped the poll with their admirations of one of the Wii's launch games, The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess. jessiec92 loved Twilight Princess because they "never get tired of playing it. It was also my intro to the Wii, so it has some sentimental value."
As well as featuring in Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Mario was also a strong contender in Super Mario Galaxy 1 and 2, Super Paper Mario, and New Super Mario Bros. Wii.
Thankfully though, it was somewhat refreshing to find that not everyone chose a Zelda or Mario game as their favourites.
OracleLink felt that Kirby's Epic Yarn was their favourite, as "it is great fun and has one of the most inspired art styles I've ever seen. Granted, it is a tad on the easy side to simply complete, but really, completing the levels is no walk in the park."
ThunderManEXE rates RPG Opoona as their standout Wii game as "It is totally crazy and difficult, yet rewarding and full of worth. The Music takes you for an Artistic loop! Very artsy and satisfying when you level up and complete job tasks. I am still surprised about how many people haven't heard about this game."
Many people chose Okami, which RiverNinj4 stated was "gorgeous and has a wonderful storyline."
Other mentions varied from Metroid: Other M, Epic Mickey and the Resident Evil Wii games.
The Wii: ForThere were plenty of people who love the Nintendo Wii, for a number of reasons. Perhaps the most popular claims were for the "family friendly" aspect, and the addition of the Virtual Console. For those who do not know, the Virtual Console is a shopping section on the Wii which allows for older games, such as those from the NES and SNes eras, to be downloaded onto the Wii's memory. Not only does it allow fans to relive their classics from the past, but it also touches on a new fan base who perhaps were not old enough when these games were released the first time around.
DoctorEvil06 expressed their joy of the Virtual Console as they "don't have to hunt down old cartridges anymore!" Clearly convenience is another factor in what makes the Virtual Console one of the best parts of the Wii for some.
SmashQueen added further praise to the Virtual Console, as they "can play old games on it that I heavily regret selling as a kid."
DabidoChyuruba feels that "The Wii is great because it can be family friendly and a multiplayer console, but it also has great games for single-player, be it "casual" or "hardcore."
KuroNEruKO feels that "the Wii is great for the family, as it has a range of family friendly games and games for the casual and the hardcore gamer. There's no other console that could host Kirby's epic yarn and C.O.D. on the same system and still be taken seriously."
The Wii: Against
Whilst the majority of voters agreed that the Nintendo Wii is a great console, there were still some others who have remained unsatisfied with Nintendo's latest large console.
jaclynonacloud felt they "really didn't enjoy what they've done with the Wii. There was so much potential for it, and none of it was really used."
InDonaldismoVeritas felt that the "Wii is a pretty bad console to be honest. While it has some excellent games (Metroid Prime Trilogy, Super Mario Galaxy 1 & 2, Epic Mickey, Super Smash Bros. Brawl...), they are very few and far in between. I hope the Wii U will get bigger 3rd party support, because it really needs it."
It seems that Nintendo's biggest franchises, The Legend of Zelda and Super Mario have definitely proved a hit amongst fans of NintyFans, and I am sure that this relates to many other people outside of this fan group also. Lesser known games made it into the "best of the Wii" list, which proves that behind the big sellers lies some hidden gems.
The Wii proved to be a big hit with the majority of the poll contributors, mainly for the family friendly aspect, the variety of games, the use of motion control, and finally, the Virtual Console. However, some people remain disappointed with what the Wii has to offer. Let's hope that the promising Wii U helps to unite the fan base into an overall more positive one. Only time can tell.
