Review: Mad Catz C.T.R.L.i Controller & Joystick Smartphone Controller

I was recently sent two gaming products to review on 8-Bit Girl by the nice guys over at Both of these products are designed to work with Smartphones to enhance your gaming experience across a multitude of supported apps. Check them out below:

Mad Catz C.T.R.L.i Bluetooth Controller

Shooting zombies in Dead Trigger 2.
Designed for the iPhone (up to the iPhone 6 Plus), iPad and Apple TV, the C.T.R.L.i controller from Mad Catz is incredibly useful. The design closely resembles that of the Xbox 360 controller, offering a detachable phone holder for gaming on the go. It also connects to your TV so you can enjoy any of the supported apps on the big screen.

It connects via Bluetooth and is supplied with a pack of 2 AAA batteries for the controller itself. This lasts for up to 40 hours before they need replacing, which is pretty good. It's worth picking up some rechargeable batteries though for when the time for changes comes. The controller does equipped with dual analog sticks, D-pad, trigger and bumper buttons, as well as a classic ABXY four button layout. It's lightweight and comfortable to hold, and the buttons actually feel pretty fluid when you're gaming.
Just a few of the games available.
I tried this with an iPhone 6s Plus, but unfortunately although it connects to the controller, the buttons are unresponsive, so I switched to my boyfriend's iPhone 6 Plus. It was a bit of a pain to connect on Bluetooth (it kept saying that no device was found once when I tried to connect it), but once it was connected, it worked absolutely fine. The buttons worked as soon as you pressed them, and it felt a lot more comfortable using this than the touch screen itself, especially on more advanced games such as zombie-shooter Dead Trigger 2.

Officially certified by Apple, it's compatible with hundreds of games. You'll be prompted to download the official C.T.R.L.i app (definitely do this!), which allows you to access the comprehensive game catalog. Although there are a few that are clearly knock-offs of more popular games, there's also a few gems hidden away, such as Angry Birds Go, Dead Trigger 1 and 2 and 2-Bit Cowboy. It even supports multiplayer gaming, such as Fifa 15 and Monster Hunter: Freedom Unite.
Angry Birds Go.
The Mad Catz C.T.R.L.i is guaranteed to work with the following devices: iPhone 5s, iPhone 5c, iPhone 5, iPad Air, iPad Mini with Retina display, iPad (4th generation), iPad Mini and iPod Touch (5th generation), Apple TV.

You can grab this controller for £39.99 here.

Joystick-It Game Controllers
Jetpack Joyride.
Note: I was sent one, but you'll be able to pick them up as a double pack for £7.99 here.

This pack of joysticks sucker onto your screen so that you can gain extra precision and a more comfortable gaming experience than simply moving your thumbs around on the touch screen of your Smartphone.

These joysticks are removable and easy to re-position without causing any marks or damage to the screen. They are also screen protector compatible, so you won't need to remove any casing first. The conductive technology inside of these controllers triggers the on-screen controls fluidly. It actually feels a lot more comfortable using this on the platforming style games, such as Hitman and Jetpack Joyride, whilst console ports such as Tomb Raider and Bioshock are much easier to control with these compact sticks attached.

Most games are compatible with these sticks, but please be aware that the layout of the controls will vary for each game, so you may have a bit of repositioning to do before you find the sweet spot.
