Review: Mass Effect: Homeworlds #1

Mass Effect: Homeworlds, is a comic centred around James Vega, the tattooed video game tough guy from the series of the same name.  Sadly the most exhilarating aspect of this comic is indeed the front cover.  Hell On Earth, gives the impression that the comic is going to be about action or intense drama, regretfully it is not.

The comic centres around James and his relationship with his waster of a father.  He opposes James joining the military and forces him to purchase drugs.  James' dad is the most well rendered character in the comic.  He looks great but seems out of place with not only the rest of the setting but also the artwork.  It is evident that Eduardo Francisco liked drawing him most of all.  His art work throughout the book ranges from sketchy to heavy on and off, whilst James' dad is the only figure that is drawn consistently.

The art certainly is far from being hell on earth as the story is pretty bland and slow.  Mac Walters dialogue is solid but the story is weak and boring, throttling his ability.  It really needed a bit more driving the basic unimaginative plot, then maybe Walters' dialogue and Francisco's art may have really had a chance to shine, but under the blandness of the story they struggle to even get their heads above the bland sea of a plot that surrounds them.

Hopefully in the next few instalments the story will pick up, however it looks doubtful.

Mass Effect 3 Extended Cut Released This Tuesday

Mass Effect 3 Extended Cut DLC will be released on the 26th June, BioWare have announced.

This free to download DLC is set to give an improved sense of closure for fans who had complained that the original ending left too many unanswered questions. This 1.9GB update brings with it new cinematic sequences and epilogue scenes that will allow players to get a "deeper insight into Commander Shepard's journey", depending on what choices the player settled on during playing the game.

This DLC will also show how successfully players reached their endings, depending on these choices, their successes and failures during play. BioWare have also recommended that players load a save before the attack on Cerberus Base, and play through until the end of the game from there.

So whilst the endings don't change, BioWare have promised that this hefty free download should provide a more fleshed out ending, where the ending will differ much greater than before, again putting a deeper emphasis on player choices.

Mass Effect 3 fans...you've not got long to wait now!

E3 2012: Nintendo Conference Summary

Nintendo's press conference kicked off with Nintendo's main man Shigeru Miyamoto being pursued by some cute CGI Pikmin. After a fun star, Miyamoto goes on to introduce Pikmin 3, the first Nintendo developed game to be announced for the Wii U tonight. As well as looking incredibly adorable, Pikmin 3 features a brand new type of Pikmin. Rock Pikmin can break down walls. Pikmin 3 will be compatible with either the Wii U pad or the WiiMote.

Miyamoto then exits the stage to be replaced by Reggie "my body is ready" Fils-Aime. He explains what we should expect from the Wii U game pad (with help from a brief video), then goes on to discuss the MiiVerse. Working as a feature on the Wii U, the MiiVerse will be shown as the home screen when the Wii U is switched on. It displays all of your friends, as well as those who use the console, and acts as a place to interact about the games you are playing.

New Super Mario Bros. 2 was then shown. It contains a new boost mode, new power ups and features on the Wii U game pad. It doesn't look that different from New Super Mario Bros., but no doubt it'll be a fun multiplayer.

It was then time for some third party titles for the Wii U. The first of these was Batman:: Arkham City Armoured Edition, which uses the Wii U game pad to control Batman's gadgets, amongst other things. The graphics looks crisp and impressive, whilst the Wii U game pad gameplay is promising. Good stuff!

Scribblenauts Unlimited allows players to create their own bunch of wacky items, and looks cute and vibrant in HD.

Aftr this, a brief video showing other third party releases was shown. These were: Darksiders II, Mass Effect 3 (this one got a huge cheer from the audience), Tank! Tank! Tank!, Tekken Tag Tournament 2, Trine 2: Directors Cut, Ninja Gaiden 3: Razor's Edge, Aliens: Colonial Marines.

Back to Nintendo again, with the introduction of the latest fitness title, Wii Fit U, which allows for gameplay through the game pad rather than the TV, and brings brand new fitness features.  Balance boards will still work with this.

Karaoke title SiNG is next, where an incredibly forced "gameplay" trailer is shown. The Wii U game pad is used to read the lyrics, whilst dancing actions are shown on the television screen.

A small amount of time was dedicated to the Nintendo 3DS next, where New Super Mario Bros 2 showed off plenty of gameplay...and coins. Lots of coins. Paper Mario: Sticker Stars and Luigi's Mansion 2 both look brilliant, whilst he mentioned that Castlevania: Mirrors of Fate, Kingdom Hearts 3D, and Epic Mickey: Power of Illusion were on their way. A separate 3DS separate conference was presented on Wednesday.

A cute and amusing trailer for Lego City was shown next, which shows off the free-roaming aspects of the game. Lego City Undercover is also in development for the 3DS.

Ubisoft took the stage next to show off their mature zombie title, ZombiU, where the game pad is used for sniping, scanning and much more. Just Dance 4 was demoed, which shows how the Wii U game pad is integrated into the dancing. Also shown in a brief summary clip was Rabbids Land, Assassins Creed III, Your Shape: Fitness Evolved 2013, Rayman Legends, Marvel Avengers: Battle for Earth and Sports Connection.

Finally he conference ended with the unveiling of Nintendo Land, which includes 12 mini games based on some of Nintendo's best known series, such as Zelda and Mario. By the looks of things, this will be packaged in with the Wii U when it is released this November.

The best games in Nintendo's conference:
Pikmin 3
ZombiU
Paper Mario: Sticker Star
Luigi's Mansion 2

EA Ends Mass Effect 3 Freebie Offer

EA has ended an offer of a free copy of Battlefield 3 with every pre-order of Mass Effect 3 on Origin. According to users of Origin, the offer was taken down abruptly, but those who qualified for this promotion before it was terminated will still gain a code for Battlefield 3 between now and the 8th March.

The offer was supposed to last until the 5th March, so what prompted EA to change their minds so quickly? Whatever the reason, I'm sure the news will annoy quite a lot of fans.

Freddie Prinze Jr Lends Voice to Mass Effect 3

Anyone remember Freddie Prinze Jr? It seems like such a long time ago since he was starring in countless teen chick-flicks, or parading on screen in his Fred-from-Scooby Doo guise (although according to his IMDb, he's still present on TV). Well, regardless of all that, now he's back...sort of.

It's been revealed that Prinze Jr is the voice of the new character in Mass Effect 3, James Vega. Vega is included as a character which will help newcomers to the series understand the past events detailed in the previous two games.

You can check out an excerpt from a Game Trailers TV video below, where Freddie Prinze Jr discusses his character and the Mass Effect series.
