The Walking Dead Season 3: New Screens & Poster!

Ah...The Walking Dead. Those of you who've followed my blog for a while would know just how much I love this Telltale Games series. I've played it through several times now, on the Xbox 360, Steam and PS4, and I can't wait for Season 3.

New screens were shown off at the San Diego Comic Con via a live-stream, and colour me impressed. I knew that they'll be a new graphics engine in play here, but I didn't expect it to look this gorgeous! Hopefully, this will be ironing out the glitchy moments that Telltale Games previous efforts have been known for in the past.

First off, here's the new poster:

The Walking Dead Michonne: Episode 1 - 'In Too Deep' Review

Zombies are swarming in left, right and centre. Reality and a nightmarish vision of the past blur into one as Michonne struggles to establish what is real and what is her past memories coming back, once again, to haunt her. She's hit rock bottom, and one of the first choices in the game shows this. Michonne grabs a gun, readies it, and moves it to her head. Do you pull the trigger, or is there something worth fighting for afterall?

This is what Episode 1 of The Walking Dead: Michonne explores. Where does a woman who has lost everything discover her fight again? Right after this explosive five minute opener (complete with some incredibly fluid quick-time zombie-slaying), Michonne is rescued by Pete, a fellow survivor who is taking shelter in a boat with his fellow crew-mates. Things start to pick up when the team pick up a radio signal from a distressed sounding girl. Stationed on a nearby marooned ferry, Michonne and Pete decide to take a trip over by row-boat. As customary with The Walking Dead, things aren't that easy. The duo are attacked shortly after departing by walkers. It seems that like everything else, the sea is not safe either. They escape, leaving their boat to join the walkers wading at the bottom of the water.

The Walking Dead: Season 2 Screens & Teaser Emerge

Whilst Telltale Games are keeping quiet on a solid release date at the moment, details for The Walking Dead: Season 2 have started to emerge.

The company, behind the multi-award winning point and click series The Walking Dead return the follow up, season two. Season two will see players take control of Clementine, the first game's sweet orphan who pretty much everyone who played it felt some sort of emotional attachment to.

In season two, Clementine faces the zombie apocalypse alone after the events of the first series. Like the hugely successful TV show and comic series before it, Season Two combines the horror and battles against not only the undead, but fellow survivors too.

Expected later this year, The Walking Dead: Season Two will once again consist of five episodes that will conclude at some point in 2014. A season pass for the series will be available when the game is released.

Check out these newly released screens and the teaser trailer below. Avoid scrolling down if you have not played The Walking Dead: Season 1 yet! (spoilers inbound).

Screens:
Oh, the feels! :(

"Still keepin' that hair short..."

The graphics and cartoon style seem to be even more defined here!

One of the new characters announced for Season Two-Winston.

Who is sitting opposite Clem? Guess we'll find out in due time!

Infernal Mode coming to Resident Evil Revelations

Capcom has announced that their upcoming re-release of Resident Evil Revelations will include Infernal Mode. Infernal Mode provides players with an even tougher challenge, with different enemy placements and remixed items.

Resident Evil: Revelations will be released on the Wii U, Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 on the 21st May (North America) and on the 24th May (Europe). Originally released on the Nintendo 3DS, this home console edition boasts updated graphics, and new modes. The original version on the 3DS was met with great review scores, so no doubt the re-released version will also do well!

Resident Evil 6: 14 Reasons Why It'll Be Great!

A friend of mine wrote a piece on WhatCulture completely blasting the Resident Evil 6 demo. Whilst he is entitled to his opinion (and I respect it), sorry Shaun, as you know, I had completely different feelings to you about what I was playing!

So, I have decided to compile a counter piece to his criticisms, not to have a "one up" on him, but rather just to show the other side of the argument. Resident Evil 6's demo seems to have been met with some mixed feedback since it was released publicly on the 18th September. Well, here's one person's opinion anyway.

1. "Bad Graphics"

I am not really sure why people are complaining that the graphics are so bad. For starters, the demo was condensed into an 800mb download, so the quality suffered a little. However, saying that, I still thought it looked rather impressive. Just wait until the actual game is out, we'll be able to play it at the resolution it was designed for!

2. "The Map Is Too Helpful"

The inclusion of pointers and an overly helpful map system does relieve the tension somewhat. Knowing that your objective is closer than you originally thought, for example. However, if you don't like being guided every step of the way, the map can be turned off! With it turned off, you will be left to find your own way, and it restores some of that exploration that the original games had. It just seems a little silly to criticise a feature that you do not even have to utilise if you don't want to.

3. "You Can Move While Shooting"

Whilst I agree that running and shooting is a little harder to master, fans have been calling for this option for ages now, hence why Capcom decided to include it. Plus, give it time...you'll grow to like it! Resident Evil Revelations also included moving and shooting, and I felt it enhanced the gameplay. However, if moving and shooting is not for you, you don't have to move! You are still able to shoot whilst standing!

4. "Lame Obstacles"

All Resident Evil games have included obstacles, even the most obvious ones that of course hinder you from accessing the next part of the level. It's just the way the games play out. Also, it is such a small aspect of the game to actually get worked up about, in my opinion.

5. "Clunky Triggers"

The complaint that hits were not registering on the zombie is a bizarre one. Personally, I found that I had no difficulty in shooting. Yes, zombies now, for the most part, take more than one hit to the head to go down, but in no way did I find it clunky or glitchy.

6. "Boring Objectives"

Yes, I agree with you that Chris' campaign was very reminscent of the gameplay in Call of Duty, but boring objectives? The El Gigante-esque fight seemed quite enjoyable to me. The sort of objectives we had to encounter in the demo are typical of the Resident Evil series. Yes, they can be quite predictable (fighting off zombies whilst waiting for assistance, for instance), but come on...shooting the zombies is still a lot of fun, right?

7. "Over-Generous Loot"

OK, in a way I sort of agree with you on this one. The new inventory system was a little tricky to master. It took me quite some time to work out how to combine herbs and use them, but once I figured it out, I actually started to prefer the new look. As for the abundance of herbs...yes, there was a ton, but part of me wonders if these were only in full flow for the sake of the demo? Plus, the full game will have difficulty options, so ammo and herbs should be much more sparse on a higher difficulty.

Also, your partner seems to be able to hold their own without any problems, which again, I feel will be different in the main game.

8. "Poor Mini Games"

We are only basing it on one example...when Leon has to start the police car at the end of his demo. Personally, I thought this was fine. It was a brief chunk of the game that was easy to complete and quite fun to watch. Part of me thinks the mini-games will be much like Resident Evil 4 and 5-spamming the action buttons as fast as you can to escape enemies.

9. "Zombies With Guns"

Zombies have had weapons since Resident Evil 4! Resident Evil 5 included gattling gun wielding Manjini too. In Chris' campaign, we can see that the situation has turned into an all-out war. BOW's have advanced, and are now able to shoot the opposition. These "J'avo" pose a greater threat then the zombies we saw in the original games, due to their ability to wield a gun, run and attack (except techincally...they're not zombies). In a series which has seen the virus evolve over time, it seems like the next logical step.

10. "Teammate Revival"

I can see your point with this one. I found that I was close to death on a few occasions, and each time my partner revived me. For someone like me, who admits that I'm not an amazing gamer at times, I sort of welcome this inclusion. However, for those "hardcore gamers", knowing that death is never going to be an option when a partner is in close proximity can take the fear factor and difficulty out it a little.

However, play it with a real-life team mate and perhaps this changes.

11. "Too Many Weapons"

Yes, Sherry has a ton of weapons in her and Jake's campaign. However, the argument that it cannot be possible for a woman with such a slight frame as Sherry should be able to wield all of these is a little silly. Look at the other action games. Lara Croft managed to fit a whole arsenal in her miniature brown backpack! At the end of the day...it's just a game.

12. "Hand To Hand Combat"

Personally, I felt that the hand to hand combat had improved somewhat. Kicking a zombie to the ground then stamping on it's head felt satisfying. The inclusion of powerful combat helps to knock back a horde when either a reload is needed, or you sense you're being way too surrounded.

13. "Camera and Controls"

Whilst I agree that at times the camera can get a little frustrating, on the other hand, once I had managed to get used to this new inventory system, I had no problem with the controls. Shooting felt OK, melee was easy to master and I was soon weapon changing, reloading, combining and using herbs without a problem.

14. "Inventory"

At the beginning, I have to admit I hated the inventory. I found it overly confusing, and it took me some time to actually work out how to even equip a herb to my HUD. However, give yourself a little time to work through the system, and at least in my opinion, it seemed to work after that. I have since played the demo through three times, and have to agree that the more it is used, the easier and clearer it becomes. Give it time!

In conclusion though, I think it is hard to agree on how good or bad this game will be until you are able to play the full version. The demo only gave us a brief glimpse, and perhaps for many, they weren't the best sections to choose. Whatever your opinion, wait until the main game is out, play through it then decide if the demo really reflects the overall experience.

Resident Evil 6: Demo Review

The Resident Evil series has undergone several transformations since it's beginning in 1996. Resident Evil 5 saw a shift in gameplay, adopting more of an action stance than the slow, tense gameplay of the previous titles. Resident Evil Revelations, a 3DS exclusive, introduced the original RE horror once more whilst still embracing this new action-heavy style, creating perhaps one of the best games in the series so far.

And now, we have Resident Evil 6. Due for release in November 2012, the game is split into three campaigns, all offering different experiences. Thankfully, the demo, which was released today on PS3 and Xbox 360, allows a taster of all three, making this essentially three demo's in one. Good stuff? Well, read on to find out!

Leon Kennedy's Campaign

Leon's demo takes place at Tall Oaks University. The opening cut scene shows  Leon being confronted by the President...in zombie form. Hesitant to kill the President of the United States, his finger wavers on the trigger, but of course, we all know what he must do. After killing the President with a headshot, it's down to business.

This segment of Leon's campaign felt very much like an old Resident Evil setting. Zombies are how they used to be-slow, shambling and moaning. It's also incredibly un-relentless. The undead crowd around you constantly in hordes, and there is barely enough ammo to go around. Like the earlier Resident Evil games, ammo conservation is a neccessity here.

A new addition is the melee system, which helps to offer Leon and his partner Helena a chance to recover when ammo has depleted entirely, or a reload is in order. Knife kills are gory, satisfying and essential, especially as the ammo is quite sparse here. Like Resident Evil 5 before it, 6 will allow both players to share items together. This means that every time one of you picks up ammo, both of you will receive it. Also, online co-op is supported as well as offline, which I found out when a random player took over the NPC as Helena (sorry, I had to play as Leon first time round!) halfway through the demo.

The aim of this portion of the game is to simply escape the campus. Leon's campaign combines the traditional Resident Evil style tension with a few "on the rails" style sections (most notably when driving the police car).

Chris Redfield's Campaign

Chris' campaign appears to be completely different from Leon's.  Set in a war zone in Eastern Europe, Chris and his team are tasked with taking down the virus ravaged enemies in a series of winding streets. You'll notice straight away that unlike Leon's campaign, Chris's is an all-out action assault. Adopting more of the action gameplay of Resident Evil 5 than the slow tension that of the previous titles like Leon's campaign appears to be, you'll be using plenty of ammo on a colossal B.O.W., as well as gun-wielding zombie enemies. Also, these are different enemy types this time, which helps to keep things refreshing.

Whilst Leon's campaign was incredibly low on ammo, Chris's one has plenty. It's quite enjoyable going from one extreme to the other, actually. This does mean that the suspense felt in Leon's campaign isn't really that present. When ammo is in full supply, and you've got a buddy playing through it co-op with you, the difficulty does not really show too much.

Jake Muller's Campaign

The third and final demo is Jake "Wesker Jr" Muller's campaign. Whilst Leon's had the traditional Resident Evil feel, and Chris's went for action, action and more action, Jake's feels like the middle ground.

In this demo, you are introduced to a new character, Wesker's son, whose blood contains the cure to the vastly spreading virus. Teaming up with Sherry Birkin, who fans may remember from Resident Evil 2, the duo are working on escaping a desolate city.

Like the other two campaigns, Jake's also features it's own enemy type. Grappling with g-virus style enemies, whilst battling tar-like creatures and pouncing beasts, the demo certainly keeps you on your toes. Jake also seems like he will be a pretty interesting character, so I am looking forward to finding out more in the full game.

My Favourite Demo?

Whilst I highly enjoyed the action in Chris' campaign, I'd definitely say that Leon Kennedy's demo was by far the most enjoyable. It packed the most suspense, and harks back to the earlier days of the series when the slow, shambling zombies were just as, or perhaps more than, creepy than those seen in recent instalments.

So there you have it, over 60 minutes of gameplay to try out! As a Resident Evil fan, I was bound to like at least a little aspect of it, and thankfully I was not disappointed. Whether you're looking for old Resi gameplay, or the new action heavy format, both are present here. It's worth downloading and playing all three just to get a taster of things to come.

Dead Island: Riptide Screen & Details

Official Xbox Magazine has shared the first screenshot and details for Dead Island: Riptide.

The screenshot above shows a two characters escaping some zombies on a motorboat, a new transportation mode available in the sequel. This motorboat acts as a weapon as well, with the ability to dice up zombie bodies whilst travelling through the water. A bit like running them over in the cars available in the first game.

Dead Island: Riptide will be set in a different part of the tropical island setting of Banoi that we saw in the previous game. Also, all four characters in the first game will be back once again. Players will be able to import their character from Dead Island into Riptide, so perhaps all weapon customisations and stats will be available too? As well as this, Riptide will include new zombies and weapons.

Gameplay is going to be much of the same melee-focused combat of the first game. Dead Island: Riptide's release date has not been announced as of yet.

'Agent Hunt Mode' Added to RE6

Resident Evil 6 will be getting a new mode to co-exist with the usual Mercenaries Mode.

'Agent Hunt Mode' allows you to play as an infected creature, with the aim being to take down one of the games heroes, such as Chris, Leon, etc.

The new mode will be unlocked once the story has been cleared. This is normally the case for Mercenaries too, but the Mercenaries Mode will be available immediately. Some of the stages from this will be able to be used in the Agent Hunt Mode.

Voice chat will be essential here, as each player will spawn into a stage as either a bio-organic weapon or a zombie, whilst one player will play as Chris, Leon, etc. When players enter the stage as one of the infected, the lone player will be alerted to their presence, but will not know which one is human-controlled, and which are NPCs.

Resident Evil 6, complete with both Mercenaries Mode and Agent Hunt Mode, will be released on the 2nd October 2012.

Parallel Zombies Shambling Onto Android

There are plenty of developers jumping on the zombie game bandwagon nowadays. Many are brilliant, whilst there are others that are just plain awful. Judging by the trailer and screens, hopefully this one shall fall into the former!

Developed by PerBlue, Parallel Zombies is an Android-exclusive zombie hack and slash title. The game promises to see you hacking through hoards of zombies, either with other players in real time (with dropout multiplayer), or alone.
Level up and you earn new skills, or you can collect components to craft new weapons. The game utilises GPS technology to connect with survivors on your street to protect the neighbourhood. Also, those who like their customisation can customise their character. Choosing from one of three class specialisations, your avatar will also use a chosen weapon and any chosen skills.

Justin Beck, PerBlue's Co-Founder and CEO says that Parallel Zombies marks our third title in PerBlue’s family of location-based mobile games. We’re excited to put an eerie

spin on the classic zombie survival game. You never know, there might be a zombie lurking in your own backyard.”

Parallel Zombies it out on the 19th July 2012. Check out the launch trailer below:

Zombeer Announcement Trailer

We're awash with zombie games once again, but none of them look as bizarre as Zombeer

Zombeer is a first person shooter blended with elements of survival horror and comedy. Set straight after the inital outbreak of a zombie apocalypse, players will play as K, who wakes up after the outbreak with a hangover. Whilst those who have been bitten are currently roaming the streets as the undead, K's been bitten...but he's not a zombie? And why exactly? Well, drinking beer is the only way to prevent the infection from taking over, it seems.

The game will apparently contain plenty of nods to films, comic books and games, and judging by the trailer...it looks like it's going to be a bizarre one.

The intended consoles, and a release date have not been announced as of yet, although expect Zombeer before the end of the year. Check out the trailer below. What do you think?

Feature: 16 Years of Resident Evil

16 Years of Resident Evil: Counting down the fifteen most frightening moments of Capcom’s successful zombie franchise.

Sixteen years ago, Resident Evil shambled onto the scene, and is ever-popular. Fans love the creepy, often terrifying feel. Here are fifteen of the most frightening moments in the series’ history.

15. Mr X Smashes the Camera. (Resident Evil 2, 1998)
Just when you thought that the enemies in your immediate proximity had been cleaned out, you stop to view a live camera feed, just to check. Of course, something is lurking there; the gigantic Mr. X. As he gets closer to the camera, you realise that it is actually the corridor just around the corner from yourself. Confrontation is inevitable, so cue the panic!

14. Unexpected Zombie in the Train’s Refrigerator. (Resident Evil: Zero, 2002)
Walking through the train, a zombie suddenly breaks out of a refrigerator to the side of you. Fan Lewis Terry, 23, stated that “it’s made me jump on every single play-through of the game”, a sure sign that even the briefest of moments in Resident Evil retain their scare factor time and time again.

13. Dogs Jumping Through the Corridor Window. (Resident Evil 1, 1996)
A tactic used regularly throughout the series, the sudden enemy appearance routine works incredibly well in the moment where some infected dogs jump through the corridor window in Resident Evil 1. Snarling, ravenous and horrific, it’s hard not to jump when they smash through to face you.

12. Appearance of Doctor Salvador in the Village. (Resident Evil 4, 2005)
What’s not scary about Doctor Salvador? Not only is he shambling towards you wielding a chainsaw, but his sack face is somewhat disconcerting. Fan James Stayte, 30, agrees that the scariest moment for him was “whenever you heard the chainsaw man coming in the Resident Evil 4 mercenaries’ missions, where he appears in giant form, wielding two chainsaws.

11. The First Glimpse of Nosferatu. (Resident Evil-Code Veronica X, 2001)
Nosferatu is the mutated form of the Ashford Twin’s father. Held captive for 15 years, he manages to break free when Claire Redfield and Steve Burnside are escaping the building.

The duo makes it to the helipad to escape, but Nosferatu unfortunately arrives just in time to stop them from leaving, resulting in one of the series most intense showdowns.

10. The First Appearance of the Executioner. (Resident Evil 5, 2009)
The Executioner appears towards the beginning of Resident Evil 5, when the locals become hostile towards Chris and Sheva.

What the Executioner lacks in agility is made up in his hulking physique and silent movements. Panic rises rapidly when he appears, and the terror is created by the constant need to evade his gigantic axe and vice-like grip.

9. Encountering Rachel. (Resident Evil Revelations, 2012)
Rachel works as a cross between Lisa Trevor and Nemesis, two previously terrifying enemies from past titles. This combination creates a laughing, lanky and hardy antagonist. You can often tell when Rachel is about to appear by the sudden creepy laughter, which gets louder the closer you get to her.

8. Birds in the Gallery Corridor (Resident Evil 1, 1996)
Birds may seem rather tame when compared to many of the others who have made this list, but they provide one of the most chilling moments of Resident Evil 1. Perched along the top of the gallery corridor, players had to press the buttons under parts in chronological order to unlock the puzzle. Make a wrong choice and these birds attacked the player. Being attacked by these birds was very frightening, and left many players dreading the moment they may go wrong.

7. “May Day!”- The Creepy Distress Call. (Resident Evil Revelations, 2012)
Jill Valentine and her partner hear a faint voice repeatedly saying “may day”. As you get closer, you realise that the voice turns loud, distressed and increasingly deranged, until finally, you reach the shaking, bolted door in which the voice emanates.

At this moment, the fear comes from the inevitably of conflict once you realise that the “person” inside will be released.

6. The First Zombie of Resident Evil. (Resident Evil 1, 1996)
The infected are crucial to the franchise. There is no forgetting that moment when players encountered the first ever zombie in Resident Evil 1. Fan Michael Powis, aged 47, said it was “the view of the first zombie feasting on fresh meat and turning to face me” that really instilled some dread into him. I’m sure that most Resident Evil fans will look back at this moment and agree with him.

5. First Encounter with a Licker. (Resident Evil 2, 1998)
First encounters with an enemy can also provide some of the scariest moments in the series. The Licker encounter is by far one of the most disturbing first introductions. Lickers are agile, strong and incredibly creepy.

4. The First Appearance of Nemesis. (Resident Evil 3, 1999)
The Resident Evil 3 antagonist, Nemesis is sent to Raccoon City to take down the surviving the members of the S.T.A.R.S team. Nemesis claims S.T.A.R.S. pilot Brad Vickers as his first victim. Cornering him outside the front doors of the Raccoon City Police Department, Nemesis impales Vickers through the mouth, breaking his neck as Jill Valentine watches in terror.
From then on, Nemesis appears regularly. He’s a tough enemy to defeat, uses rocket launchers, and breaks the boundaries set in Resident Evil 1 and 2. Shudder.

3. Beating Crimson Heads. (Resident Evil: Directors Cut, 1997)
Crimson Heads are much more powerful than normal zombies. They take more ammo, are quick, deadly and disturbing. Crimson Heads distil a sense of dread in even the most experienced players of Resident Evil.

2. Lisa Trevor. (Resident Evil: Directors Cut, 1997)
Lisa Trevor becomes a lot more terrifying when you have heard her back story. As a 14 year old girl, Lisa and her parents are captured by Umbrella and tested on. Separated from her parents and with help from the drugs, Lisa’s sanity deteriorates, and she becomes a walking corpse. Wearing the faces of her parent’s look-a-likes, sent in an attempt to subdue her, Lisa becomes increasingly violent.

She re-appears several times before she is finally defeated, but her appearance is scarier than her persistence. Not only is she wearing the flesh of her victims, she is horribly disfigured by years of virus tests, and is genuinely scary to encounter.

1. Encountering the Regenerators. (Resident Evil 4, 2005)
Regenerators take the top spot because they are utterly creepy. The terror comes first in hearing their ragged, shallow breathing get increasingly closer, leaving players to wait for their appearance. Their first appearance is by far the most terrifying, as the horrid breathing paints a picture in the players mind of what to expect. Imagination sometimes is a far scarier tool than the reveal itself, and this is certainly true here. Regenerators are incredibly hard to kill, and will often deal significant damage. A form of regenerator is now present in last month’s Resident Evil Revelations, which proves that these horrible creatures are just as scary as they were back in 2005.
